Beyond Trans offers funding for therapy for those ambivalent or distressed about their medical transition and free therapeutic programs for gender-related distress.

Gender-related distress during these troubled times affects people in different ways. Some consider transition, some have transitioned, and others choose to detransition. There are also those who feel ambivalent about their medical transition or step away from the belief that changing their body will resolve their distress.

We launched Beyond Trans to support individuals wherever they are on their journey, offering understanding and resources to meet their needs.

We believe it’s time that the varying needs of different groups are offered comprehensive help.

What we offer

We subsidize psychotherapy for anyone who has been harmed by medical transition, meaning that you only need to pay a small token amount per session for 12 sessions after which there will be a review and consideration for an additional 12 sessions. Effective therapy offers more than simplistic ‘affirmation’: it offers a therapeutic process that encourages insight and self-awareness. We don’t think cost should be a barrier.

To find an appropriate psychotherapist, please consult our directory of therapists of available professionals. There you’ll find descriptions of the work they do and a contact form to reach them. Once you have found a compatible therapist, they will bill Beyond Trans and receive reimbursement for their services.

If you are already working with a mental health professional and would like to receive a subsidy, please have your therapist apply to be listed in our Directory. Beyond Trans will subsidize treatment only if the therapist has an approved listing with us.

We offer therapeutic support groups for individuals experiencing gender-related distress, as well as those who have been harmed by medical transition. Therapeutic support groups give you the chance to process your experiences, hear from those who have similar experiences, and develop strategies for positive change.

New Group – Women’s Circle is a peer support group for female adults who are questioning or ceasing their medical transition. We see value in single sex spaces, particularly when discussing gender and sexuality, and offer this group as a space where women affected by medical transition can connect and share with one another. Women’s Circle is not psychotherapy.

🖼️ Help us see the bigger picture

We’re gathering information about transition and detransition, so we can understand as much as possible about these under-researched phenomena – especially from a legal and medical point of view.

If you’d like to tell us about your trajectory, and the treatment you received, please reach out to us: everything you tell us is in confidence.

📢 Work with professionals to find a bigger audience

If you want to speak to the wider public, we can put you in contact with professionals who can help – whether it’s print, radio or TV journalists, or a professional ghost-writer who can work with you to write a manuscript to pitch to a book publisher.

More and more people want to hear about your experience: if you’re ready, we can share your voice.

🌻 Living Beyond Transition

There is a distinct lack of knowledge around transition and detransition. Genspect aims to provide a series of psychoeducational webinars, as well as host Q&As to provide people with the most up to date expertise available.

This series promises to be as informative as it is empowering.

Therapist testimonials

“I am finding working with de-transitioners and desisters to be a breath of fresh air. No need to tiptoe around gender issues. In my experience, this population is very engaged in the therapeutic process.”
Psychotherapist from Canada

“Providing therapy to people who have been harmed by medical transition is certainly complex and yet it is also satisfying work.”

UK therapist

“When I first started this work I was daunted by the level of distress. However, I’m glad I stuck with it as detransitioners need help and support.”

LCSW from Arizona

“Thank you so much for the opportunity to work with this client. While her experience has been harrowing, it has also been the most rewarding work I have done to date.”

Beyond Trans service user testimonials

“The service helped me feel even more confident in my choice to
detransition, and the lack of stigma (which is everywhere outside of
communities such as this) towards my choice has enabled me to flourish.”
